Toray

One World. One Market. One Source. BPX.One

Toray Industries, Inc. is a multinational corporation headquartered in Japan that specializes in industrial products centered on technologies in organic synthetic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and biochemistry. Its founding business areas were fibers and textiles, as well as plastics and chemicals.

In 1926, we started out as a business producing rayon yarn. Since then, we have worked to manufacture basic materials, and have been involved in manufacturing advanced materials and high-value-added products across a range of fields including resins, chemicals, films, carbon fibers and composite materials, electronics and information-related materials, pharmaceuticals and medical products, water treatment, and the environment, in addition to our original field of textiles.

The source of our innovation is our research and technology development. Materials often cannot be seen in end products, so they do not stand out, but without innovative materials, it is not possible to create an attractive end product. The four core technologies that we have cultivated at Toray are polymer chemistry, organic synthetic chemistry, biotechnology, and nanotechnology. By pursuing the development and integration of these technologies to their utmost limits, new technologies and new materials can be created.

ECODEAR™ Polylactic Acid (PLA) Resin

ECODEAR™ is based on polylactic acid (PLA) derived from plants, rather than petroleum and other fossil resources. This means that it can readily be returned to the natural environment after use.

ECODEAR™ is an environment-friendly product that helps to conserve fossil resources and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It also has people-friendly characteristics, including mild acidity. This material is perfectly suited to the century of environment. This product is at present used for electric, OA,commodity appliances. TORAY plans to develop this eco-friendly plastic for various appliances.

Plant-based Synthetic Fiber

Ecodear® is a integrated brand of materials and products made from biomass-based polymers. Toray is expanding its use of plant-based synthetic fibers, such as PET, PTT, N610, and PLA, on a global scale.

Ecodear® PET is a plant-based polyester fiber created through polymerization and melt spinning of plant-derived ethylene glycol, extracted from sugarcane (saccharum officinarum) molasses, and petrolium-derived terephthalic acid. It conforms with Green Public Procurement (green purchasing) standards for plant-based synthetic fibers, as well as being an ISO14024 type 1 environmental label (ecomark) certified product.

With its biodegradable qualities, Ecodear® PLA is seeing wide use in a range of everyday, engineering and agricultural applications, and has also been adopted in desert greening.
