Compostable resins
Biodegradable and compostable resins
What is compostable resin made of?
Family of biodegradable & compostable resins made from different starches such as corn, potato, cereals, and other biologically sourced polymers. Compostable resins are designed to run on existing standard industrial equipment, offering the opportunity to completely replace traditional plastics.
Benefits
• Compostable resins can be processed by conventional extrusion, cast film, blown, sheet, extrusion coating, and injection molding lines without extra technological investment.
• Completely biodegradable and compostable. These two properties allow a plastic packaging material to be recovered through the organic recycling of solid waste (composting and anaerobic digestion) and are certified by the European standard EN 13432
Industries and applications
Flexible packaging
Fruit bags/organic waste bags/food packaging
An important market of compostable resins is the flexible packaging. Carrier bags made of compostable resins are the perfect alternative to lightweight non-biodegradable plastic bags as they provide all the positive aspects of traditional bags while providing biodegradability and compostability. Applications for such carrier bags range from grocery plastic bags and plastic films to food packaging, among others. They are also the ideal solution for organic waste collection bags as they are organically recycled into fertile compost. Some formulations of our compostable resins meet more demanding requirements, having been certified for OK Compost and OK Home Compost by TÜV AUSTRIA according to the European Standard EN13432 and in line with the Energy Transition for Green Growth Act (France).
Food Service & Catering
Single-use plastics
Bioplastic products made of compostable resins for catering (plates, cutlery, cold and hot drink cups, straw, sand stirrers) are 100% biodegradable and compostable.
Compostable resins can also be used in a wide variety of packaging applications for fresh and dry food as well as non-food products, including bags, pouches, sealing films, and cling film as well as ridged pots, trays, and lids. These resins provides the consumers with solutions for all their single-use tableware and plastic packaging in contact with food to be collected in a single bin ready for organic recycling, rather than sent for disposal to landfill or incineration. Once disposed in composting facilities, the plastic articles will disintegrate in compost due to the effect of microorganisms.
Agricultural
Mulch Film
Compostable resin mulch film provides a better alternative to traditional mulch film. It is environmentally and agronomically more efficient while maintaining its mechanical properties and usage characteristics. Its usage is identical to that of traditional mulch film, with an additional advantage due to its compostability characteristics — an attractive attribute — making our compostable resin the best alternative for such applications. It eliminates all plastic waste and the need for its disposal. Having been certified as biodegradable, it transforms into organic substances under natural conditions, acting as an agent and nutrient for future crops.
okean®
Water soluble resins
The leading solution for plastics
The Okean® range of products is completely biodegradable in water. The Kompuestos team has refined new methods to go that one extra step in order to secure our rivers and marine life. Okean® can biodegrade in water under natural conditions, ultimately being converted into carbon dioxide and water. Okean® biodegrades in a relatively short time even in natural conditions, such as the marine environment, when exposed to marine sediments from coastal areas, a habitat where a lot of plastic waste ends up.
Furthermore, as it is essentially bio-based, it produces less carbon dioxide than fossil-based polymers and contributes to the prevention of global warming.
Plastic waste: A growing concern.
Waste should not be dumped freely. Ocean waste is a serious issue due to its detrimental effectson the sea life and marine environment.
Okean® products are not designed for uncontrolled disposal but rather for recovery through organic recycling. Biodegradability does not give way to free dumping, and products should still be disposed of appropriately.
