Danimer Scientific

One World. One Market. One Source. BPX.One

Danimer Scientific, formerly known as Meredian Holdings Group Inc. and MHG, is a biopolymer manufacturer headquartered in Bainbridge, Georgia. Danimer Scientific owns the patent for Nodax medium-chain-length branched polyhydroxyalkanoates, mcl-PHA
Danimer’s customers for Nodax include Nestlé, Bacardi, PepsiCo, and, most recently, , Mars Wrigley for its Skittles candy packaging.

Danimer Scientific is a pioneer in creating more sustainable, more natural ways to make plastic products. For more than a decade, our renewable and sustainable biopolymers have helped create plastic products that are biodegradable and compostable. They return to nature instead of polluting our lands and waters.

Our technology can be found in a vast array of plastic end products that people use every day. Applications for our biopolymers include additives, aqueous coatings, fibers, filaments, films, hot-melt adhesives and injection-molded articles, among others.

These products offer all the advantages of our bioplastics, including:

• Reduced dependency on petrochemicals
• Adherence to ASTM and EN requirements for biodegradability and compostability
• FDA approved for food contact
• Biodegradation in a fraction of the time it takes for petro-based plastic decomposition
• Virtually no carbon footprint

Our Extrusion Lamination Creates Compostable Tie Layers — and More
The demand keeps growing for the use of renewable extrusion lamination materials for many types of sustainable packaging. Danimer Scientific is stepping up to meet that demand.
We have successfully demonstrated our ability to offer cost-effective materials that operate well on existing extrusion lamination equipment. Our products also support compostability standards and are food-contact certified.
One area of sharp focus has been the development of renewable solutions for tie layers between dissimilar layers of films or other materials.

These materials can be single or multilayer applications, depending on the needs of the customer and the structure sought.
A Wide Range of Product Uses
• Snack-food bags
• Flexible drink packaging
• Coffee bags
• Heat-sealable lids
• Rigid paper packaging: tubes or cartons
Certified Biodegradable and Compostable for Environmentally Friendly Applications
Danimer Scientific’s compostable film resins offer an environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum-derived resins such as polyethylene and polypropylene.
Our films are created from compostable, bioplastic materials yet are not photodegradable, so they can be used in most applications where good UV resistance is needed.

Even better, Danimer Scientific film resins for agricultural films are biodegradable, which helps farmers avoid the cost of film removal and disposal. They can also be used to manufacture:

Carryout bags
• Produce bags
• Trash and compost bags
• Landscaping weed-barrier film
• Greenhouse and agricultural mulch film
• Hay-bale wrap
• Composite food-service item film
• Odor-barrier packaging film

• Liquid water barriers requiring breathable film
A Wide Range of Features
• Certified compostable to ASTM D6400-99 or ASTM D6868-03 standards
• Excellent printability
• Energy savings through processing at lower temperatures than other resins
• Time and cost savings in manufacturing operations: articles made of our film resins can be composted instead of being landfilled or incinerated

Injection molding resins create even more value through energy savings by processing at lower temperatures than traditional polyolefin. Suitable for a variety of products, they can be used in hot and cold runner systems with comparable cycle times.

A Range of Outstanding Features :

• Very good replacement for traditional polyolefin in many applications
• Certifiable to ASTM D6400-99 or ASTM D6868-03 standards as compostable
• Can be formulated for a wide variety of injection molded parts
• Can be made in a variety of colors
Product Examples
• Single-use cutlery (forks, knives and spoons)
• Single-use coffee pods
• Landscaping and erosion-control stakes
• Caps/multiple closure applications
• Single-use, direct food packaging

renewable additive enables improved processing efficiencies such as higher operating speeds, increased throughput and reduced defect rates. It also provides excellent “de-nest” characteristics and reduces the material’s adherence to metal during processing.

Impact Modifier
This additive can significantly enhance the impact resistance of PLA, improving overall toughness while increasing the flexibility of the end products. By adjusting addition rates, the physical properties can vary depending on requirements. This additive can be used with all processes, including thermoforming, blow molding, injection molding and cast or blown film production.

Color Concentrates
Danimer Scientific also offers a wide range of colorants compounded with a PLA base resin. Our materials are fully compatible with the PLA materials while supporting the use of renewable materials.

Chain Extender
This additive is used to help enhance melt strength, mechanical and rheological properties. When used in our reactive extrusion technology, this material enables our customers to achieve the desired performance they need from their biopolymer resin.

Aqueous Coatings:
With our aqueous coatings, we seek to provide solutions that can be used as a water-based finish for cardboard packaging and paper-based food service items. Our goal is to formulate these coatings to be FDA compliant for direct and indirect food contact. And their high surface tension will allow them to be used as both a base coat and a functional top coating, providing oil, water and grease resistance.

Hot-Melt Adhesives:
We’re developing a line of hot-melt biobased adhesives using our proprietary condensation polymer technology. This will enable each product to be ASTM 6400 compostable and suitable for hydro repulping operations. We also expect these materials to eliminate “stickies” and the clumping of glue left by traditional pressure-sensitive adhesives.

Our thermoforming resins allow converters and brand owners to make products that help achieve those goals.
Our resins for thermoformed articles are compostable, which means end users can avoid the costs of landfilling or incineration associated with petroleum-derived products.
These resins also create value through energy savings during processing because they require lower processing temperatures than traditional polyolefin.
In short, Danimer Scientific resins are an environmentally friendly option that reduces the use of petroleum for disposable items made of plastic.
