BLUERIDGE™
HOME COMPOSTABLE. TRANSPARENT. SUSTAINABLE.
BlueRidge™ Cellulosic Pellets are an excellent solution to the need for attractive, economic and ultimately sustainable alternatives for difficult to recycle single-use plastics. The naturally transparent material is based on Cellulose Acetate and sold in pellet form. The main raw material is sustainably-forested cellulose, which is functionalized with acetic acid, commonly known as vinegar. The end product, while chemically similar to paper, can be processed into a wide range of applications, including straws, cutlery, thermoformed lids and other products using conventional plastic processing machinery. BlueRidge™ materials are broadly biodegradable and can be home compostable, depending on the form.

For Celanese, BlueRidge™ Cellulosic Pellets are not just an exciting product line, but also an investment in our history and heritage. Since 1939, we’ve made Cellulose Acetate at our Narrows, Virginia site, bringing to life the importance of sustainability. Sitting in the heart of the Blue Ridge mountains and on the banks of the New River, our Narrows site is the inspiration for the BlueRidge™ brand, which uses existing technology to solve today’s new challenges. The BlueRidge™ material offers sustainability from start to finish and features improved thermal and impact properties compared to many other bio-based, biodegradable materials, all while offering full transparency. Leveraging our industry-leading expertise and infrastructure in Engineered Materials and Cellulose Derivatives, the BlueRidge™ product is able to support even the largest applications.

BLUERIDGE

BIODEGRADABLE SINGLE-USE PACKAGING WITHOUT COMPROMISES

Although its chemical composition is closer to paper than plastic, BlueRidge™ Cellulosic Pellets can be efficiently processed on conventional plastics machinery to provide an alternative to conventional plastics in countless applications.

Compared to other biodegradable polymers, BlueRidge™ pellets offer improved mechanical and temperature performance and maintain full transparency, making the product particularly attractive for packaging and food-service applications.

While the material is not an option in stretch film applications, it is proving to be a material with vast potential in many rigid single-use products, such as straws, cutlery, thermoformed lids, containers and packaging among many others. BlueRidge™ material offers more sustainable choices for customers without sacrificing functionality and features.
